Consultants: Fill January Before December Goes Quiet

Decision-makers check out mid-December. If January work isn’t agreed by then, you start the year with an empty calendar.

October and November are your selling window

Look at the conversations already on your calendar before you start looking for new prospects. A client discussing next year’s budget has a reason to talk about January. Ask which work needs approval before people leave for the holidays.

Some clients have budget left to spend before Dec 31. Ask what they want to get done with it, and check how their finance team handles timing.

Use the time while decision-makers are still at their desks to understand their approval process. Your contact may want the work, but someone else may need to sign. Find out who that person is before you send an agreement.

The October holiday marketing checklist can help you plan your own outreach dates. Work backward from your clients’ holiday schedules, rather than waiting for a quiet week that never arrives.

Offer a planning session, not a proposal

Give prospects something useful to book: a 60-90 minute 2027 planning session. Explain the problem you’ll work through and what they’ll leave with. Keep the promise narrow enough to deliver during the appointment.

For an operations consultant, that could mean choosing which handoff needs attention before a team grows. A strategy consultant might help a client decide which planned initiative deserves January’s time. Use a problem you already know how to help solve.

Ask them to bring whoever owns the problem. Send a short prep note. Their existing planning docs are usually plenty.

End with a scoped January project: the result, and how you’ll get there. If it turns out you’re not the right fit, say so in the room. You’ll both save a week of proposal back-and-forth, and they’ll remember you were straight with them.

Reach out to the right people

Start with past clients whose work gives you a reason to reconnect. Refer to the project you completed together and ask what has changed. That conversation is more useful than a general announcement that you have availability.

Next, revisit prospects who paused a decision. Read your notes before calling so you remember why the conversation stopped. A delayed project may still be relevant, but the original scope may no longer fit.

Referral partners need a clear description of who the planning session helps. Tell them the problem a good prospect would mention. Ask for an introduction only when they know someone who needs that help.

Make every message personal. Wondering how to get consulting clients for January? Start each conversation with a reason that only applies to them.

Make it easy to book

Pick one booking link and one phone number for the offer. Put them right next to the invitation, with one plain sentence about the session. Interested prospects should be able to book in under a minute.

Open the link on your phone and go through the booking process. Make sure the available times match the time you’ve reserved for planning work. Leave enough room around those appointments to prepare and finish your notes.

Some prospects will call while you’re with a client. An 800.com AI agent can pick up, answer questions about the offer, and book the session on your calendar.

Teach it the same details from your invitation: the session length, the problem it solves, what they’ll walk away with, and what to bring. Then add a few examples of good-fit problems so it can tell a caller whether they’re in the right place.

Then call it yourself as a prospect on the fence. Describe your problem and ask if the session fits. If the answer wouldn’t convince you, tighten the instructions.

Know which outreach worked

Keep LinkedIn inquiries separate from website calls and event follow-ups. Assign a number to each source before you begin promoting the session. Record where each number appears so later changes don’t confuse the results.

800.com call tracking uses separate numbers to show which outreach sources bring calls.

Add your own notes about what happened after each conversation. A call may lead to a planning session, while another reveals a poor fit. Those outcomes help you decide where to spend your time next.

Judge each source by the work it brought in, not the calls. An event that landed one solid project is worth going back to. A channel that rings all day with the wrong people needs a sharper offer before you run it again.

Close it before Dec 15

Use Dec 15 as your target for agreeing January work. Ask each client when their approver will be available. Leave time to resolve questions while the people who can answer them are still working.

Send the agreement while the session is still fresh. Match the scope to what you discussed, flag any changes, and put the January start date right at the top.

Put the kickoff on the calendar once the work is agreed. Name what the client needs to provide before that meeting. If a key person will be away, choose a date that lets them participate.

Clients closing their budget on Dec 31? Ask which internal deadlines they’re up against, from purchase orders to vendor setup and final sign-off. Get through all of it, and you walk into January 2027 with signed work and a kickoff on the calendar.
